The russians are provoking an eco-catastrophe at the Kakhovska HPP
The occupiers are dumping water from the Kakhovskaya HPP. The water level can only be maintained by upstream stations.
The russians captured the Kakhovska HPP on the first day of a full-scale invasion. Until September 2022, the HPP continued to supply electricity to the unified energy system of Ukraine. However, in October, with the intensification of russian terrorist attacks on the Ukrainian power grid, the station was blocked. Currently, the Kakhovskaya HPP is an exclusively military facility.
Yes, the occupiers have raised the shutters and are dumping water, creating an environmental hazard. Recently, the level of the Kakhov reservoir was at a low level. If it drops even lower, there will be problems with water intake.
Now the water is at the mark of 14.3 m. It was managed to raise the level due to increased discharge of water at hydroelectric power stations, which are upstream. This was stated by the General Director of Ukrhydroenergo Ihor Syrota in an interview.
“At the moment, as long as water harvesting continues, we can maintain the water level for 2-3 months. What will happen next, we do not know. The russians can lift all the shutters and dump the water tomorrow,” Sirota noted.
We will remind you that there is a shipping lock on the territory of the Kakhovsky hydraulic hub. It is necessary for vessels to overcome the difference in water levels in the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP. Seizure of the sluice with sluice gates completely blocks shipping at the mouth of the Dnipro.
