The construction of a new barge from UDS is delayed

The pace of construction of the new SLG barge is restrained by the limited capacity of the slip.

Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company has announced the start of the main stage of construction of its new barge. The work will include cutting off the aft parts of the donor vessels, docking and testing the compartments, painting the hull, installing hatch covers of the barge section and converting the dewatering, fire extinguishing and bow systems of the hull.

However, the pace of construction of the ship is restrained by the limited capacity of the slip, which has long been in need of modernization. The problem can be solved by removing from the dock the unfinished hulls of two sea vessels that have been standing on the dock for more than 15 years. The hull of the main vessel “Captain Stolbovskyi” occupies 30% of the total area of the slip and interferes with the normal operation of the plant, the UDS reports.

The ships were built according to the government program, so the UDS has no right to independently decide their fate. According to the statement of the UDS, since last year, the organization has sent more than one request to remove outdated vessels. USM recently wrote that UDP has started building new SLG barges  based on old lighters.
