The corvette “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” should enter the Navy in 2024

The flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, the corvette “Hetman Ivan Mazepa”, is to enter the fleet next year.

All the weapons intended for the corvette will be delivered in a timely manner, and the ship should enter the fleet next year, the commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, said in an interview with “ArmyInform”.

According to him, the construction of such ships as the corvette “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” continues according to the schedule and even a little ahead of schedule.

“We understand that our victory is inevitable, but, unfortunately, the enemy will still be our neighbor even after he leaves our territory. And we must have such a fleet that will no longer allow the aggressor to even think of attacking us again and look towards our country,” commented Neizhpapa.

The commander also clarified that the ship will be equipped with:

• 76 and 205 mm Kalibr artillery systems;

• cruise missiles;

• an anti-aircraft missile complex with a range of over 20 km;

• means of electronic warfare.

On October 2, 2022, the first Ada Milgem type corvette for the Ukrainian Navy was launched in Turkey. In August, the ship was named “Hetman Ivan Mazepa”.

We will remind, the corvette for the Navy of Ukraine was built in Turkey. The contract for the construction of the ship was concluded by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with Turkish companies in December 2020.

The hull of the “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” corvette is made of steel, which was produced even before the full-scale war at MMKI and “Azovsteel” of the “Metinvest” Group.

The ship was laid down at the Turkish shipyard RMK Marine Shipyard in September 2021. “Metinvest” handed over 1,000 tons of hot-rolled sheet for the production of the corvette. Part of the batch was brought directly from Mariupol (MMKI steel), the other from the Italian Metinvest Trametal, where rolled products were made from Azovstal slabs.
