The picture is illustrative.

A cadet of the Odessa Maritime Academy was suspected of forging a sailor’s passport at the border.

Because of this, a criminal investigation was opened, as a result of which the sailor did not get on the flight.

A cadet of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” turned to the Trade Union with a problem – the border guards suspected him of forging a POM (seafarer’s identity card).

“The cadet successfully received all the necessary documents and signed a contract for his first flight as a cadet. However, upon leaving, he was unexpectedly denied permission to cross the border of Ukraine. The border guards called the police, the POM was seized,” said the Trade Union of Maritime Transport Workers of Ukraine .

In total, the sailor spent more than 8 hours at the border crossing. Criminal proceedings were opened under Part 4 of Article 358 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The cadet faced a fine or arrest for up to 6 months, or restriction of freedom for up to 2 years.

“He himself was shocked, because he personally went through the procedure of obtaining a seafarer’s identity card and had all the necessary evidence. The lawyers of PRMTU consulted the sailor and proposed a plan for further actions,” the Trade Union explained.

A request for confirmation of the fact of issuance of POM was sent to the Shipping Administration, which later confirmed the registration and issuance of the document.

Later, through the court, the criminal proceedings were closed and the cadet’s sailor’s identity card was returned.

The Odessa cadet also lost his previous contract, but the company found a new place for him. Later, the cadet crossed the border and is already on his first flight.

As previously reported by USM, the Shipping Administration renewed the procedure for verifying the seafarer’s documents.
