The European Commission cannot help Ukraine with grain exports
The European Commission does not have enough money in the budget to help with the export of Ukrainian agricultural products.
The European Commission does not have money in the budget to finance additional transport costs for the export of Ukrainian grain. This was reported by Reuters with reference to its own sources.
Now Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain exporters, will have to rely almost entirely on expensive routes through the EU. Instead, the cheapest alternative artery, the Danube River, is not able to increase the necessary traffic volumes after the Russian bombings.
One of the sources said that significant funds may not come until after the mid-term budget review, which is at least several months away.
Earlier, Ukrainian farmers applied for help to the European Commission. The business asked for financial assistance to cover additional transport costs for using alternative EU routes. The additional cost of transportation by alternative routes is 30-40 dollars per ton of cargo.
At the same time, European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski said that Russia could benefit from a decrease in Ukrainian exports if the EU does not help reduce transit costs.
