Exporters want to send Ukrainian grain through terminals on the Danube instead of Klaipeda
Exporters of Ukrainian grain prefer not the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania), but the terminals in the Danube region.
It is unprofitable for sellers to export Ukrainian grain through Klaipeda, they are looking for appropriate infrastructure in the Danube region, said Laimonas Rimkus, general director of the stevedoring company Bega, which operates in the Klaipeda port, Interfax-Ukraine reports .
Earlier, the company shipped a small volume of Ukrainian grain.
At a time when it was profitable to transport agricultural products through Poland in transit to Lithuania, the price of agricultural products was very high — 350-400 euros/ton FOB. Now the price is 200-250 euros/ton. This means that sellers or manufacturers cannot afford to spend significant amounts on transportation, it is not profitable for them.
According to Rymkus, a significant part of exported Ukrainian grain is directed to the expanding Danube terminals. The expert doubts that agricultural products will be transported again through Klaipeda.
In his opinion, a breakthrough can be expected only if the EU helps Ukraine to export grain through Europe, compensating part of the transport costs.
Previously, USM reported that Lithuania offers to export Ukrainian grain through the ports of the Baltic states.
The head of the Klaipeda port, Algis Latakas, said that after Russia’s disruption of the Grain Agreement, Klaipeda can receive more than 10 million tons of grain, but the biggest problem remains the issue of grain delivery to the port.
