Everything for the citizens: Russia recognized the ITF as an “undesirable organization”
The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation granted the status of “undesirable organization” to the International Transport Federation (ITF) and its Russian branches.
In particular, the Russian Professional Union of Seamen became “undesirable”, reports Fleetmon.
According to sailors of the aggressor country, the ITF’s role was to help the crews, for example, during salary delays. In some courts, the salary can be delayed for about three months. The ITF has inspectors all over the world, so seafarers could complain and inspectors would board the ship and begin inspections. In the end, the situation could lead to the arrest of the vessel until the sailors received their salaries.
In addition, the ITF assisted seafarers in the event of contract delays. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some companies detained seafarers for almost a year to save money. In these cases, the situation could also be resolved by the ITF.
In Russia, they say that with the recognition of the ITF as “undesirable”, little will change for Russian sailors working for foreign companies. Changes may occur on Russian ships.
