Sweden became a member of NATO – this threatens the operations of the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea

Sweden officially joined the North Atlantic Alliance and became its 32nd member.

This became known from the corresponding protocol published on the website of the US State Department on March 7. Thus, the protocol on the accession of the Scandinavian country to the Alliance entered into force.

The Swedish flag-raising ceremony at the NATO headquarters in Brussels is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 11.

It is worth noting that such a political move actually means that the defense alliance has almost surrounded the entire Baltic Sea. And this is an important oil trade route for Russia and the location of one of its fleets.

“The Baltic Sea is becoming NATO’s sea,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Kristianis Karinsh, who is one of the candidates for the post of NATO chairman.

Also, Sweden will bring with it to NATO the island of Gotland in the center of the Baltic Sea, which is called a “giant aircraft carrier”. As the FT notes, the island “facilitates the defense from the sea of the three small Baltic states.”

Previously, USM said that the Russian Federation can sell grain stolen in Ukraine through the Baltic ports.
