Ireland “expelled” Russian reconnaissance ship that spied on underwater infrastructure
Russian reconnaissance ship has been diverted from critical cables in the Irish Sea.
The reconnaissance ship “Yantar” was seen operating drones in the area of underwater energy and internet infrastructure, The Guardian reports.
The ship was diverted from the Irish Sea after it entered Irish-controlled waters and patrolled an area containing underwater pipelines and cables for energy and the internet.
The Irish Navy vessel LÉ James Joyce escorted the ship from the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) at around 3am on Friday, and aircraft continued to monitor its movements as it headed south.
USM previously reported that protecting NATO countries’ underwater infrastructure, including cables and pipelines, from hybrid threats from Russia is becoming a serious challenge for the Alliance.
