The attack on the submarine in Novorossiysk showed the vulnerability of Russian ports to underwater attacks

Ukraine’s use of kamikaze underwater drones against targets in Novorossiysk has exposed gaps in the defense of Russian ports.

The strike by an underwater drone on the base in Novorossiysk demonstrates a new level of technology and training of the Ukrainian army. This was stated by Turkish defense and maritime security expert Kozan Selcuk Erkan, writes Ukrinform.

According to him, there is a serious intelligence aspect here, because the submarine remains underwater for a long time and also enters the port. This means that the Ukrainian side has carried out very deep and complex preparatory work.

Erkan emphasized the technical complexity of such attacks: underwater communication for relatively simple platforms is limited, it is difficult to accurately determine the location of the target and autonomously hit it.

“If the attack was successful and the submarine was hit, as Ukraine claims, this is a really big event… We see that Russia tried to protect the port well from threats from the surface of the water, but the underwater component was actually left without due attention,” the expert emphasized.

In general, in the world, protection against underwater drones, according to the expert, is at an early stage of development. For threats from under the water, there are currently a very limited number of solutions. These could be additional sensors at the entrance to ports or special platforms capable of responding to underwater targets, but these technologies have not yet become widespread.

As USM reported, the day before, the SBU revealed new details of the operation to blow up a submarine in Novorossiysk.
