During the construction of the hull of the “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” corvette, 1,000 tons of Azovstal steel were used.
The hull of the “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” corvette, the future flagship of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is made of steel that was produced even before the full-scale war at MMKI and Azovsteel of the Metinvest Group, writes TTS.
The corvette was laid down at the Turkish shipbuilding company RMK Marine Shipyard in September 2021, “Metinvest” handed over 1,000 tons of hot-rolled sheet for the production of the corvette. Part of the batch was brought directly from Mariupol (MMKI steel), the other from the Italian Metinvest Trametal, where the rolled steel was made from Azovstal slabs.
As previously reported by USM, the contract for the construction of the ship was concluded by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with Turkish companies in December 2020. At the end of last year, the corvette was already 80% ready. It was launched in Turkey in October 2022.
