Russia failed to conduct nuclear tests in Arctic waters
The russians unsuccessfully tried to test the new Poseidon nuclear missile. The nuclear submarine “Belhorod” was supposed to conduct the testing of the warhead.
In recent weeks, the United States has been watching a possible test of nuclear weapons in russian federation. Among the ships participating in the training was the submarine “Belgorod” , which has been modified to launch unmanned underwater vehicles, including Poseidon torpedoes, CNN reported, citing an anonymous senior US official.
Last week, U.S. intelligence observed the vessels leaving the testing area in the Arctic Sea and heading to the deployment site without conducting the tests. The US government believes that the Russians could have faced difficulties. It is unlikely that russian federation planned to detonate a nuclear device, but the tests were potentially dangerous: a malfunction of the Poseidon nuclear propulsion system could carry risks of radiation contamination.
A terrorist country may try to test the torpedo again. However, it is worth noting that the waters in the test area will soon begin to freeze, which will limit the “window” for operations.
In 2018, Putin announced the development of the Poseidon nuclear submarine, which russian propagandists call a “doomsday” torpedo. He said that this torpedo was “impossible to intercept.” Russian propaganda claims that Poseidon, if detonated, is capable of causing large-scale tsunamis that could destroy Great Britain or US coastal cities. Instead, there were no official notifications from russian federation regarding the completion of the development.
Previously, USM wrote that the American superpower nuclear submarine USS Rhode Island entered European waters in response to russian nuclear blackmail.
