Ukraine and Turkey are negotiating the placement of floating thermal power plants

The Turkish company Karpowership, which owns the world’s largest fleet of energy barges, is negotiating to place three of them in Odessa.

“We are negotiating with the Odesa authorities and the energy company Ukrenergo on the location of three power plants with a total capacity of 300 MW near Odesa. Depending on the needs and approvals, we could do it by the end of the year. The vessels are ready and we can deploy them in three weeks,” Karpowership top manager Zeynep Kharezy told Nikkei Asia in an interview.

Thus, the 300 MW that three vessels can supply will provide electricity for up to 1 million homes at full capacity.

In addition to commercial and technical parameters, the parties must also resolve the issue of vessel safety. It is likely that a United Nations mediation may be necessary to reach an agreement.
