The icebreaker “Noosfera” again left for the Antarctic
The Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosfera” has started a new Antarctic season. On December 24, the ship left Cape Town (South Africa) for Antarctica.
“Noosfera” started the second Antarctic season under the flag of Ukraine. The first season started on January 28 and ended on May 27.
The current expedition is a joint Ukrainian-Polish one, financed mainly by the Polish Antarctic Program. So first, “Noosfera” will go to the Polish Antarctic Station “Arctowski” (Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station), which is located on King George Island, according to the National Antarctic Science Center.
The icebreaker will also deliver cargo and a Ukrainian team of technical specialists of the Akademik Vernadskyi station. Specialists should complete the started modernization of the station’s infrastructure. This season, the plans include replacing the heating system, arranging a new boat storage area, grounding work for the diesel and main station buildings, as well as a number of other urgent works required for the successful winterization of the 28th UAE.
It is expected that the ship will reach the Ukrainian station by the end of January 2023.
