The Bangladesh government has sent relevant notices to ministries, ports, shipping services and international organizations regarding the new restrictions.

The sanctions cover a wide range of vessels, including oil tankers and cargo ships operated by seven companies. None of the companies will be able to import goods from any country using sanctioned vessels.

Bangladesh has 197 long-distance international shipping vessels. If businesses in the country can quickly adapt to the new conditions, the sanctions will not affect the delivery of cargo and the cost of transportation, said the chairman of the Bangladesh Shipping Owners Association (BOGSA), Azama Chowdhury.

The restrictions will also affect the construction of Bangladesh’s largest energy facility, the Ruppur NPP, which is being built with the support of the Russian Federation. A significant part of the equipment and materials for the project is delivered there from Russia.

It will be recalled that in December, a russian cargo ship was refused entry to a port in Bangladesh by direct order of the country’s government. The ship “Ursa Major” arrived at the anchorage of the port of Mongla on December 24, and delivered cargo for the Ruppur nuclear power plant. But the ship was refused entry to the port because it is under US sanctions as the former Sparta III.

On December 22, the Russian ambassador demanded to let the ship into the port, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh rejected his request.

Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh stated that russian federation deliberately sent cargo for the nuclear power plant on a sanctioned vessel.

Sparta I, II, III and IV are ships of the fleet of the russian company Oboronlogistika, which is engaged, in particular, in the transportation of military cargo. One of these vessels could have transported drones from Iran to Russia, which the terrorist country is currently using to attack Ukraine.
