Russian ships with wheat “stuck” in the Persian Gulf
About 662.5 thousand tons of wheat from russian federation are lying idle in the Persian Gulf due to non-payment of grain debt by the Iranian government.
According to AIS data, russian ships with wheat, which were headed for Iran, have been standing in the Persian Gulf for almost half a year. reports Agricensus.
Back on January 25, the leaders of russian federation and Iran reached an agreement that the Taliban would pay for all the agricultural products that were stuck in the region. Since then, nothing has changed: ships with a total volume of about 662.5 thousand tons of wheat are waiting in the Persian Gulf and in Iranian ports. Some vessels arrived as early as September 2022 and still have not been unloaded.
Most of the wheat on board the ships is believed to have been purchased by the state agency GTC. Tehran has traditionally faced problems with payments amid lingering international sanctions. In addition to these problems and amid internal turmoil, the country has exhausted its ability to finance trade activities. At the same time, traders cannot cancel the agreements, because they will suffer significant losses, because at the time of signing the contract, the prices were much higher.
