A number of UN agencies have warned of the consequences of ending the Grains Agreement
Termination of the Grain Agreement by a terrorist country will have a severe impact on food security in East Africa.
Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative may trigger a food crisis in East African countries. Another shortage of agricultural products will lead to hunger for tens of millions of people, the World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations said.
This year, it was possible to prevent mass starvation in some areas of the Horn of Africa. However, about 60 million people still experience food insecurity in seven East African countries.
“A refusal to continue the Black Sea Initiative will hit East Africa very hard. There are a number of countries that depend on Ukrainian wheat, and without it we would see significantly higher food prices,” said WFP senior emergency specialist Dominic Ferretti.
At the same time, the World Health Organization noted that about 10.4 million children faced acute malnutrition. Somalia, South Sudan and parts of Kenya have recorded the highest levels of hospitalization of children due to hunger in the past three years.
