A russian fighter jet collided with a US drone over the Black Sea
The russian Su-27 fighter jet damaged the American MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance and strike UAV over the Black Sea during its interception.
As a result of the accident, the drone had to be scuttled, according to the statement of the command of the US forces in Europe.
“Today, two russian Su-27 aircraft carried out a dangerous and unprofessional interception of a US Air Force MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, which was in international airspace over the Black Sea,” the statement said.
At approximately 7:03 a.m. CET, one of the russian Su-27s reportedly engaged the MQ-9’s turboprop engine, forcing US forces to scuttle the MQ-9 in international waters.
“Several times before the collision, the Su-27 dumped fuel on the MQ-9 and flew in front of it in a reckless, environmentally dangerous and unprofessional manner. This incident demonstrates not only a lack of competence, but also dangerousness and unprofessionalism,” the statement said.
The US command reports that the MQ-9 was performing routine operations in international airspace.
“In fact, this dangerous and unprofessional act of the russians almost led to the crash of both planes. US and allied aircraft will continue to operate in international airspace, and we urge the russians to behave professionally and safely,” said US Air Force Gen. James B. Hecker, commander of US Air Force Europe and Africa.
