A ship that came under Russian shelling sank near Odesa

The GOLDEN LEO ship sank in the Black Sea after being shelled near Odesa on July 19.

As a result of the Russian attack, the ship sustained significant damage to the hull and superstructure, which led to its loss of seaworthiness and subsequent flooding.
There were no crew on board at the time of the sinking. Recall that after the attack, eight crew members were evacuated during a search and rescue operation. Unfortunately, 9 crew members and a Ukrainian pilot died as a result of the impact.
GOLDEN LEO (IMO 9181833) sailed under the flag of Guinea-Bissau and was transporting corn. The ship was attacked while leaving the sea corridor from the port of Chornomorsk.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the shipowner were informed about the incident that occurred on July 19.
“By attacking merchant ships, Russia is grossly violating the norms of international maritime law and the principles of freedom of navigation, creating a direct threat to the lives of seafarers and jeopardizing the stability of international maritime transport and global food security,” the department said.
