Abandoned Russian tanker to be removed from Poland and disposed of in Denmark

The Port of Gdynia has announced that an abandoned Russian tanker that has been in the port for eight years is ready to be shipped to Denmark.
The tanker Khatanga, which has been in the port since 2017, is ready to be shipped to Denmark, Gospodarka Morska reports.
The Port of Gdynia Authority had until May 5 to dismantle the vessel, and all preparatory work for this operation has already been completed. The vessel is now waiting only for the relevant documentation from Denmark, where it will be towed for disposal.
The port is now waiting for the relevant permits from Denmark. Before the vessel can be towed from the port, it is necessary to obtain documentation from the Danish Environmental Inspection Agency, Miljøstyrelsen.
We would recall that the oil tanker Khatanga (deadweight 23,000 tons) was detained in the Port of Gdynia in October 2017. An inspection of the vessel revealed structural problems, as well as questions about the training and competence of the crew. The vessel, owned by the Murmansk Maritime Shipping Company, was undergoing repairs. However, the Murmansk Maritime Shipping Company declared bankruptcy in 2020, and control of the vessel passed to the company’s trustee. The owners have periodically inspected the vessel, but seem to have lost interest. According to Polish media, the vessel is not even equipped with the main crew.
