Almost a quarter of management positions in shipping are held by women

Women hold 23.8% of management positions in shipping, but the gender pay gap is still high at around 40%.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), women occupy 29% of jobs in various maritime sub-sectors. However, only 2% of women still work on ships, writes Splash.

There is also a significant difference in pay. Data from the consulting company Spinnaker show that the difference in pay between men and women is approximately 40%.

In addition, there is progress in bridging the employment gap. Last year, women held 23.8% of management positions. By comparison, in 2021 the figure was just 12.3%, according to the Diversity Study Group’s annual review published in December.

“The good news is that companies are taking actionable steps towards a fairer industry to close the gap and give women the recognition they deserve,” commented Spinnaker Maritime HR Association Managing Director Teresa Peacock.

Using unbiased wording in job descriptions and salary transparency are things that will help create fairer employment conditions, Peacock says.
