An officer of the Italian Navy was sentenced to 29 years for espionage in favor of the Russian Federation
A former officer of the Italian naval forces was imprisoned for almost 30 years. The man collected secret documents and sent them to curators from Russia.
A military appeals court in Rome sentenced former Italian Navy officer Walter Bio to 29 years and 2 months in prison for spying for Russia. This was reported by the Italian media ANSA.
In March last year, a military tribunal sentenced him to 30 years, the prosecutor demanded life imprisonment.
The man was detained back in March 2021 while handing over secret documents to employees of the Russian embassy. The former officer was to receive 5,000 euros for a bundle of documents about the Italian military telecommunications system.
Before his arrest, Captain-Lieutenant Walter Bio worked at the General Staff. 181 photos of classified documents were found in the traitor’s phone. Among the information he collected were classified NATO materials.
