Anchor of ship detained due to damage to underwater cables raised from the bottom of the Baltic Sea

The anchor of the Eagle S, a tanker detained for damaging underwater cables, has been raised from the bottom of the Gulf of Finland in the eastern Baltic Sea.

The National Bureau of Investigation suspects that the anchor damaged a vital power cable between Finland and Estonia and four telecommunications cables, Yle reports.

The anchor was raised from the seabed by the Swedish military’s multi-purpose vessel HMS Belos.

The anchor is now in the possession of the Finnish government. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will begin its analysis on Tuesday, January 8.

The eight crew members of the vessel are suspected of committing sabotage and interfering with telecommunications.

USM previously reported that Finland is completing a technical inspection on board the Eagle S tanker, detained for damaging cables in the Baltic Sea.
