Australia for the first time banned “shadow fleet” ships from entering its ports

Australia has imposed sanctions against vessels belonging to the Russian so-called shadow fleet for the first time.

This was reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the Australian Foreign Ministry.

The country has imposed sanctions against 60 vessels that, according to the government, are part of the “shadow fleet”.

“Russia uses these vessels to circumvent international sanctions and continue to export oil and other sanctioned goods,” commented Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

From now on, the Australian authorities will have the right to require such vessels to leave Australian territorial waters, follow a proposed route or not call at specific ports. This is the first time in the country’s history that a ban on vessels entering Australian harbors has been imposed on sanctions grounds.

Earlier, USM reported that Canada had imposed sanctions against more than 200 vessels of the “shadow fleet”. The United Kingdom also announced new sanctions against the Russian shipping sector.
