Cape Town refused to accept the yacht of russian oligarch
In Cape Town, the government of the Republic of South Africa was called on to ban the entry of a russian oligarch’s superyacht into the local port.
Cape Town Mayor Jordyn Gill-Lewis has called on the South African government to ban russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov’s superyacht “Nord” from docking in the port of Cape Town, Times Live reports.
“I appealed to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naleda Pandor, with a request to block the entry of the vessel belonging to Mordashov and heading to Cape Town. I also asked that Mordashov not be allowed to enter the country,” the mayor said.
He noted that the oligarch Mordashov is an accomplice to russian state terrorism: “The main provisions of our constitution affirm our country’s commitment to human dignity and the promotion of human rights and freedoms. Hosting as a guest an accomplice to state terrorism against innocent people would be a violation of these values. If Mordashov is allowed to dock and enter the country, I believe that this will not only be shameful, but will also damage our reputation among the peace-loving nations of the world.”
The “Nord” superyacht, 141 meters long and worth more than $500 million, is under sanctions from the EU, Great Britain and the United States after the start of the russian invasion of Ukraine in February. The ship is currently on route to Cape Town from Hong Kong, where she has been graciously received .
Mordashov, a billionaire from putin’s inner circle, is one of the oligarchs also subject to Western sanctions. He is also the main shareholder and chairman of the board of Severstal, the largest steel and mining company of russian federation. Mordashov’s fortune is estimated at $18 billion.
