The Chinese-registered bulk carrier An Yang, which was en route from Changzhou to Nevelsk, ran aground on the Sakhalin Peninsula.
The vessel ran aground on the southwestern coast of the Russian island of Sakhalin on February 8 during heavy snowfall, Marinetraffic reported.
The Chinese bulk carrier was reportedly carrying environmentally hazardous materials and no rescue operation is planned yet.
The vessel has 20 crew members on board, carrying 700 tons of fuel oil, 100 tons of diesel fuel and 1,000 tons of coal.
The environmentally hazardous cargo has prompted Sakhalin authorities to declare a high-alert status.
“The authorities also said that the situation remains critical and that no clear decisions have been made regarding any rescue operations due to the risk of fuel spills and navigational hazards,” the report said.
USM previously reported that on February 9, an accident occurred on board the tanker Koala in the Russian port of Ust-Luga — the vessel is likely part of the Russian shadow fleet.
