Currently, Ukraine cannot completely demine the Black Sea, — an opinion

Currently, Ukraine does not have the capacity to carry out complete demining of the Black Sea water area.

For the most part, mine countermeasures in the Black Sea are carried out by underwater drones, Dmytro Pletenchuk, the spokesman for the Navy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said.

“Our Black Sea neighbors – NATO member states – are also trying to solve this problem in their territorial waters and in their exclusive maritime economic zone. That is why they are constantly working on creating another demining coalition,” Pletenchuk noted.

According to him, Ukraine, in its turn, is also demining “to the extent possible.” The problem is the lack of capacity to carry out a full-scale operation.

“We still take care of this problem and from time to time with the capabilities and capacities we have, we carry out this work, mostly with underwater drones,” he noted.

Pletenchuk emphasized that the main problem today is clearing the airspace, because Russia mines the sea with the help of aviation.

“As soon as the problem with the presence of Russian aircraft in the Black Sea area is solved, we can say that the problem with remote mining will actually be solved as well,” noted the spokesman of the Navy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
