Denmark closes airport again due to drones and Russian ship

A Russian landing ship with its tracking system turned off was spotted near the Danish coast.

The airport in the Danish city of Aalborg was closed for an hour on September 26 after reports of drone-like objects appearing in the airspace. This was reported by TV2.

As a result, two flights had to be canceled – to Copenhagen and Amsterdam. Later, police and security services inspected the area, after which the unknown objects disappeared.

At the same time, the Danish publication Ekstra Bladet reported the discovery of the Russian ship “Alexander Shabalin” near the island of Langeland. The ship was moving with its tracking system turned off, which should have made it difficult to identify it. The ship was spotted during an air patrol from a helicopter.

This is not the first such incident with drones at European airports. At the end of August, aircraft were grounded at Vilnius Airport, and in September, GPS failures caused problems with the landing of Ursula von der Leyen’s plane in Bulgaria. Drones have also repeatedly entered the airspace of Poland, Romania, and Estonia.

The detection of drones and the activity of Russian military vessels in the region have once again raised questions about the security of air and maritime space in Northern and Baltic Europe.

The last drone incident occurred on September 22. The drones arrived from different directions and were seen at several points. Denmark suspected the Russian cargo ships Astrol 1 and Oslo Carrier 3, as well as the “shadow” tanker Pushp under the Benin flag, which were passing nearby at that time, of launching the UAVs.

Also, the day before, a Russian fighter jet came dangerously close to a German frigate in the Baltic Sea.
