DP World Romania is doubling the volume of container transportation at the port on the Black Sea

DP World Romania has increased its operational capacities for container transportation in the Black Sea port of Constanţa.

As Reuters writes, it was possible to increase capacity thanks to investments. In particular, it will contribute to the increase of freight traffic and other types of transportation.

The operator, which is part of UAE-based DP World, has expanded its operations in Constanta, adding project cargo capacity, which is used to transport expensive and complex equipment, as well as a terminal that can handle up to 80,000 vehicles a year.

The construction of a logistics hub in western Romania was also completed this year, connecting the country’s industrial center by road and rail to the port of Constanţa, where an additional multi-transport platform will appear in 2025.

The modernization cost a total of €130 million (US$139.31 million), including grants from the European Union.

“There are several new trade streams that we are interested in attracting and maintaining. In particular, the flow of supplies to and from Turkey and Georgia, respectively, to Romania and Europe,” said CEO of DP World Romania Cosmin Karstea.

The company estimates that the multi-car platform will be 100% operational within five years.

“The new capacity more than doubles the company’s container shipping capacity to 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalents (TEUs) from the 700,000 TEUs it handled in 2023,” said the CEO of DP World Romania.

As for other types of cargo, the capacity can increase cargo flow by approximately two million tons per year.

According to the port, the total cargo flow in Constanta in 2023 amounted to 92.5 million tons, which is 22.5% more than in 2022. In particular, the export of Ukrainian grain through Constanta and investments in infrastructure contributed to the increase in the volume of operations at the port.
