EU extends trade preferences for Ukrainian steel for another three years

The preferential regime will be valid until 2028, but in the event of excessive growth in imports, the European Commission may temporarily suspend its operation.
The Council of the European Union has extended the so-called “visa-free trade” for Ukrainian iron and steel products. This is reported by “Business Censor”.
The new regulation comes into force on June 6, 2025 and will be valid for three years – until June 2028.
As reported by Rail.insider with reference to Business Censor, the decision was made as part of supporting the Ukrainian economy against the backdrop of full-scale Russian aggression. “The goal is to alleviate the problems faced by Ukrainian producers and exporters as a result of the war,” the message states.
This is an extension of the implementing act, which abolishes import duties and restrictions on the import of a number of metallurgical products from Ukraine. At the same time, according to the provisions of the regulation, the European Commission reserves the right to temporarily suspend preferences for a period of up to 12 months. This is possible if the volume of imports of Ukrainian goods reaches critical levels and begins to threaten producers in the EU.
As a reminder, the vote on the introduction of a preferential regime for exports of steel and iron from Ukraine was held on May 8.
