For the first time since the beginning of the war: Egypt bought 175 thousand tons of Ukrainian wheat

The General Directorate for the Supply of Goods to Egypt purchased 175,000 tons of Ukrainian wheat. This is the first batch of Ukrainian wheat purchased by Egypt since the beginning of the war.
Egypt’s strategic wheat reserves are enough for the next five months, Deputy Minister of Internal Trade and Supply Ibrahim Ashmawi said. According to Al-monitor, the ministry aims to import about 1 million tons of wheat by mid-2023 to increase its strategic wheat stock.
The head of the Egyptian Forum for Economic and Strategic Studies, Rashad Abdo, told Al-Monitor that the contracts signed by Egypt for the purchase of Ukrainian wheat are “a good step.”
According to him, Egypt was able to secure these contracts “thanks to the grain agreement, which allowed exports from Ukrainian ports.
“The agreement that was reached in July can help increase the supply of wheat around the world to meet the needs of different countries,” Abdo added.
