Former British minesweepers became part of the Ukrainian Navy

Two minesweepers of the Sandown class were officially handed over to Ukraine. The solemn ceremony took place in Scotland.

The ceremonial handover of minesweepers “Cherkasy” and “Chernihiv” took place on Thursday, September 29, at the Clyde (Faslane) naval base in Scotland. Ukrainian ship crews raised the flags of the Navy on the masts of their vessels, reports Dumska.

An agreement on the transfer of Sandown-class minesweepers was concluded with Great Britain in 2021.

The full displacement of the ships is 485 tons, the length is 53 meters, the width is 10.5 m, the draft is 2.3 m. The speed of the diesel engine is up to 13 knots, on the electric motor when patrolling it is up to 6.5 knots. The crew is 40 sailors, including 7 officers.

As previously reported by USM, in July, the Ukrainian military mastered the new minesweepers near the coast of Scotland.
