Free gas from the Black Sea fields: what Erdogan promises voters

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has announced the beginning of the flow of gas from the Black Sea deposits into the country’s energy system. He promised to provide households with free blue fuel ahead of the election.

Presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey are to be held on May 14. The day before, acting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised free gas, writes Reuters.

According to Erdogan, Turkey’s Black Sea gas fields will initially produce 10 million cubic meters of gas per day. In the near future, production will increase to 40 million cubic meters of gas per day.

“When we reach full capacity, we will be able to meet approximately 30% of domestic consumption annually,” Erdogan said.

Yes, free gas is planned to be provided for household consumption. We are talking about a volume of up to 25 cubic meters every month for one year. Erdogan made such a statement at the opening of an onshore gas port in the northern province of Zonguldak.

“Unlimited natural gas for all households will be free for the next month,” the Turkish president added.

Natural gas was first discovered at the Sakarya field off the coast of Zonguldak in 2020, and last year at the nearby Kaikuma-1 field.

Turkey, which has small oil and gas reserves, is highly dependent on gas imports from russian federation, Azerbaijan, and Iran, as well as LNG imports from Qatar, the United States, Nigeria, and Algeria.
