Germany is confident that Russia damaged the cables in the Baltic Sea
German investigators have uncovered new evidence indicating deliberate damage to communications cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in mid-November.
German investigators are inclined to believe that the Russian Federation is still involved in the damage to the cables in the Baltic Sea. This is reported by “European Pravda”.
Thus, the German police used an underwater drone SeaCat, which recorded “deep grooves on the seabed leading to the damaged cable”. This may confirm the suspicion that the cable was damaged by the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3, which at that time was passing in the area of the incident and probably dragged its anchor along the bottom.
The vessel is currently off the coast of Denmark, but the Chinese authorities have refused to grant permission for German and Danish investigators to inspect the vessel or question its crew. Beijing has also ignored a proposal to conduct a joint inspection.
Despite this, sources in the German publication Spiegel in the field of security claim that China is most likely not involved in the damage to the cables. Instead, the main suspicion falls on Russia, which has an interest in destabilizing European critical infrastructure. At the same time, the investigation does not yet have sufficient evidence to confirm this version.
Recall that in mid-November, two underwater communication cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea: one connects Sweden and Lithuania, the other – Germany and Finland. Lithuania is already investigating this incident as a possible terrorist act.
As USM reported, earlier there was evidence of the involvement of a Chinese ship in the damage to the cables in the Baltic Sea.
