Hungary is strengthening transit control of Ukrainian grain
The Hungarian government wants to strengthen control over the transit of Ukrainian grain through its territory.
Hungary announced the strengthening of control of transit Ukrainian grain exported by “ways of solidarity”. The measures should “guarantee that Ukrainian grain will go to the countries of destination and will not create additional problems for Hungarian farmers.” This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture of Hungary, Istvan Nagy.
The minister noted that Hungarian farmers are suffering from a decrease in prices for their products: local producers cannot compete with Ukrainian agricultural products.
Thus, to track the export of Ukrainian grain, Hungary announced the Electronic Control System for the Transit Movement of Goods (EKÁER). Budapest also wants to restore customs duties and quantitative restrictions on the import of grain and oil crops from Ukraine.
According to the official, Hungary previously appealed to the European Commission to provide financial support for farmers. We will remind you that the European Commission allocated 56 million euros to Bulgaria, Poland and Romania – as compensation for the problems caused by the excessive amount of imported Ukrainian grain. Hungary did not receive such payments, since the total volume of grain production and import in the country is not high.
