Hungary will start negotiations with Qatar on the import of LNG
The Hungarian energy group MVM will start negotiations with QatarEnergy on the possibility of supplying Hungary with LNG within three years.
“It is in Hungary’s interest to attract new sources for its gas supply,” the country’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto told Reuters.
Hungary, a member of the European Union, relies heavily on russian gas and oil, and rising energy prices have led to a widening budget deficit this year.
Szijjarto added that in order for Hungary to buy natural gas from Qatar, the European Union will need to expand the capacity of its southern LNG terminals.
Qatar is already among the world’s leading exporters of LNG, and several European countries, faced with a surge in energy prices and fuel supply problems, have been negotiating with the Arab Gulf state to reduce their dependence on russian energy sources, writes enkorr.
