Icebreaker “Noosfera” traveled more than 72,000 kilometers in three years
Three years have passed since the icebreaker was renamed “Noosfera”. During this time, the ship spent three Antarctic seasons.
This was reported by the National Antarctic Science Center.
On Tuesday, October 29, the flagship of the Ukrainian research fleet – the vessel “Noosfera” celebrates its birthday.
It was on October 29, 2021 that the official announcement about the renaming of the icebreaker took place – the former British “James Clark Ross” became “Noosfera”.
The ship left the port of Odesa on its maiden voyage on January 28, 2022, since then “Noosfera” has spent three Antarctic seasons. During this time, the ship covered 39,000 nautical miles or more than 72,000 km, which is equal to almost two round-the-world trips along the Earth’s equator.
“Three times, the vessel ensured the change of annual expeditions at the station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, as well as at the Polish Antarctic station “Artstovskyi”. A number of international studies were also conducted on board the icebreaker,” the scientific center noted.
It should be noted that “Noosfera” is currently participating in the POLARIN project of the EU program “Horizon Europe”. It provides that foreign scientists can use Ukrainian research infrastructure in the Antarctic, and Ukrainian scientists – foreign ones both in the Antarctic and in the Arctic.
As previously reported by USM, on May 8, the ship “Noosphere” docked in the port of Cape Town (South Africa), completing the third Antarctic season.
