IMO approves Guidelines on the Fair Treatment of Detained Seafarers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved the Guidelines for the Fair Treatment of Detained Seafarers.
According to the MTWTUU, this concerns seafarers detained on suspicion of committing crimes at sea.
The decision was made on March 24 at the meeting of the 112th session of the IMO Legal Committee.
The approval of this document is a significant step aimed at guaranteeing seafarers their rights in the event of detention by law enforcement agencies in foreign ports, including the right to receive independent legal assistance, interpreter services, the right to communicate with relatives, consuls and other representatives.
The need to develop such a document was initiated by the MTWTUU together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK and supported by the ITF.
Earlier, the USM reported that the trade union had achieved the release of detained Ukrainian seafarers whose documents were taken away.
