In 2024, the construction of the container fleet will set a new record

In 2024, container companies will receive 478 container ships, which will increase the total capacity of the container fleet by 3.1 million TEU.

It should be noted that 2023 was a record year – shipyards delivered 350 new container ships with a total capacity of 2.2 million TEU, breaking the previous record of 2015, when 1.7 million TEU were delivered.

However, the 2023 record is likely to be significantly broken already this year, with 478 container ships expected in 2024 to surpass the 2023 record by 41%.

In fact, more than one container ship will be delivered each day in 2024.

“While owners are currently benefiting from erratic market events outside the Red Sea as well as the Panama Canal, it may be prudent to keep in mind the expected additional capacity of 3.1 million TEUs,” BIMCO analysts said.
