On Monday, July 29, the bridge that was installed during the reconstruction was washed away between the locks of the Belomorkanal in Karelia. As a result of the accident, there are victims, a state of emergency has been introduced in the district.

According to rosZMI, search and rescue operations are being conducted at the scene of the accident.

It is known that the reconstruction of 4 hydraulic units was in progress on the White Sea-Baltic Canal. Works under the supervision of “Rostransmodernization” were carried out at hydraulic units No. 2, No. 14, No. 11 (dam No. 23) and No. 16. They were planned to be completed by the end of 2024.

The White Sea-Baltic Canal was built in 1933, it connected the White Sea with Lake Onega, which is part of the Baltic basin. The total length of the canal is 227 kilometers, of which 37 km are artificial paths. The canal contains 19 locks, 15 dams, 49 dams and 12 spillways.

The average depth of the channel is 5 meters. Until the 1950s, the canal was practically not used for shipping. In the conditions of the north, the channel was under the ice for 7 months of the year.

Today, the canal is used by ships of the “river-sea” category, which mainly transport wood, ore and mineral fertilizers. The traffic flow is no more than 10-40 vessels per day.
