In the Odesa region, the director of the enterprise is suspected of polluting the land with toxic waste from ships

In the Izmail district, with the consent of the director of one of the municipal enterprises, hazardous waste was discharged from ships at the landfill.
This was reported by the press service of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
Thus, the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office reported suspicion of large-scale contamination of land with toxic waste in the Izmail district of the Odessa region to the director of a collective enterprise that manages a local solid waste landfill.
According to the investigation, the official allowed a marine agency company to discharge hazardous waste from ships to the landfill without a mandatory environmental impact assessment and appropriate licenses.
The waste had a high concentration of oil products and was formed by washing the holds of sea oil tankers. They were illegally exported from the port and taken to the landfill for disposal.
According to the calculations of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District, such actions caused more than UAH 23 million of damage to the environment. The suspect is charged with violating the procedure for conducting an environmental impact assessment, environmental safety rules during the operation of enterprises, which led to other serious consequences (Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the prosecutor’s office, the scheme was organized by a deputy of the Safyanivka village council. The company he founded was engaged in agency service of ships on paper, but in fact was used for illegal enrichment through transactions with toxic waste.
Earlier, USM said that the Izmail port would pay more than UAH 5 million for the repair of the tugboat.
