In three years, Spain has almost completely abandoned Russian gas

The country is gradually abandoning its energy dependence on Russia, increasing supplies from the USA, Nigeria and Angola.
Spain has significantly reduced the volume of natural gas imports from Russia – in July 2025 its share in the country’s total consumption was only 6%. This is reported by Gospodarka Morska.
Back in July 2022, Russian gas provided 14.5% of the needs of the domestic market of Spain, and a year later it reached a peak value of 27.6%. Over the past 12 months, Spain has radically reduced the volume of purchases, replacing them with supplies from other countries.
The abandonment of Russian energy carriers was difficult due to the operation of long-term contracts. However, larger volumes of gas are now coming to Spain from Nigeria, Angola and the USA. In the first half of 2025, more than 30% of natural gas imports to Spain were provided by the United States.
Spanish analysts consider the reduction of Russia’s share in the energy balance as a “symbolic” and at the same time strategic step – in the context of the country’s geopolitical reorientation against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Also, the day before, USM wrote that the profits of Russian oil companies had collapsed.
