Iran is converting cargo ships into aircraft carriers
Iranian shipbuilders have converted a container ship into an aircraft carrier capable of carrying UAVs and helicopters.
The US Naval Institute has released photos taken in November 2022. Satellite images show the vessel Shahid Mahdavi, based at the ISOICO Shipyard in Bandarabbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, USNI News reported.
Most likely, the Shahid Mahdavi has been converted from a container ship to an aircraft carrier that can accommodate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Navy have already converted many cargo ships into ships, which the country cannot use due to international sanctions.
One of them, the Makran, which reportedly has a displacement of about 121,000 tons and a length of 228 meters, is a converted oil tanker.
It is interesting that last year the newly created “battleship” Makran and the 53-year-old destroyer Sahand even took part in the Russian naval parade in the Baltic Sea.
Earlier, USM wrote that Russia and Iran are building a new route for the transportation of grain and weapons.
