Israel and Lebanon are preparing to conclude a maritime agreement

An Israeli court gave the “green light” for a maritime border agreement with Lebanon.

Israel’s Supreme Court has rejected lawsuits that could delay the conclusion of an agreement with Lebanon on maritime borders in the Mediterranean Sea, Reuters reports.

The agreement establishes a boundary between Lebanese and Israeli waters for the first time. Both countries will also be able to receive royalties from TotalEnergies for exploration of an offshore gas field located on both sides of the border.

Israel and Lebanon claimed the disputed 860 square kilometers of the Mediterranean Sea, where gas fields were discovered. It was possible to reach an agreement between Israel and Lebanon through the mediation of the United States.

Negotiations on the demarcation of the maritime border lasted two years. The agreement is expected to be signed on Thursday, October 27.
