Italy has declared that it can do without Russian LNG
Italy is ready to support sanctions against Russian liquefied natural gas.
Rome has no reason to oppose EU sanctions on Russian LNG. This was stated by the Minister of Energy of Italy, Gilberto Picetto-Fratin, Politico reports.
The minister added that Italy can do without Russian gas.
“Now Italy is even able to do without Russian gas,” Piketo-Fratin commented.
Italy was one of the countries most dependent on Russian gas as of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But Italy quickly diversified supplies with the Algerian pipeline and increased LNG import capacity. According to official data, supplies from Russia accounted for less than 5% of total gas imports to Italy in 2023, compared to 43% in 2020.
“We have diversified; we have different sources and we have regasification terminals, so we have enough offers to stay calm,” the minister added.
