Maersk container ship with Ukrainians on board caught fire in the Arabian Sea (video)

A large-scale fire broke out on the container ship Maersk Frankfurt, one sailor died.

The incident occurred on July 19 at around 14:30 local time, 50 nautical miles from Karwar (India). This was reported by the Indian Coast Guard.

The crew of the Panamanian-flagged Maersk Frankfurt container ship issued a distress signal due to explosions and a severe fire on board. At that time, the vessel was traveling from Mundra (India) to Colombo (Sri Lanka).

As a result of the emergency, one sailor died. There were 21 crew members on board, including two citizens of Ukraine.

It is reported that the container ship was probably carrying dangerous cargo. Maersk has not yet confirmed this information.

Three boats of the Indian Coast Guard: “Sachet”, “Sujeet” and “Samrat”, as well as the pollution control vessel ICG “Samudra Prahari” were involved in extinguishing the fire. At the same time, the local authorities used an airplane and a helicopter. Firefighting is carried out in difficult weather conditions with high waves.

The Indian Coast Guard estimates that it will take another four days to fully extinguish the fire, which spread to the containers on the ship’s bow.
