The mine countermeasures ship of the Navy “Chernihiv” carried out ship combat calculations training using drones.
The hydro-acoustic team of the minecraft “Chernigiv” conducted training using drones. The event was held in accordance with the training plan within the Sea Breeze exercises, the Navy said.
The main task of the exercises is to ensure the readiness of the multinational forces for operations to free the Black Sea from the danger of mines in accordance with NATO standards and procedures. In particular, samples of weapons and military equipment, which the Navy received from partner countries, were used for the exercises.
The Chernihiv minesweeper was trained by remote underwater vehicles of the Sea fox type. These drones are designed to locate and identify explosive objects underwater.
After equipping the drone, checking all the systems of the device and immersing it in water, the ship’s calculation began to search for the exact location of the mine and its identification. Direct control of the drone was carried out from the operating room.
After detection, the training mine was inspected directly at the bottom with the help of a camera equipped with a drone. After fixing the location of the mine, the foreman of the mine countermeasure complex returned the drone to the ship.
The next stage is the use of a Charly-type drone, which must destroy the mine by blowing it up with itself.
It will be recalled that on June 26, a training complex began in Scotland as part of the Sea Breeze series of exercises, where ships of the Navy of Ukraine — Sandown-class minesweepers “Cherkasy” and “Chernihiv” — also took part.
Sea Breeze is a multinational military exercise that has been held on the territory of Ukraine since 1997. Co-organizers are Ukraine and the USA.
Earlier, USM reported that the Ukrainian minesweepers “Chernihiv” and “Cherkasy” left the Scottish port of Rosyth after modernization. Sandown-class ships have been in service with the British Navy since 1989. Only 15 such ships were built during the entire time.
In August 2021, Great Britain officially announced the transfer of two minesweepers to Ukraine. Already in January 2022, the agreement was ratified. Subsequently, the vessels were sent for modernization to the Scottish port of Rosyth.
The ships were named “Cherkasy” and “Chernihiv” in honor of the minesweepers of the same name lost by Ukraine in 2014. In January 2023, the Ukrainian flag was raised on the ships and put to sea — for the first time after modernization.
