More and more ships are transporting Russian oil to India

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, the fleet of the Indian Register of Shipping has grown by 117.5%.

According to Clarksons Research, the Indian Shipping Register (IRClass) fleet stood at 11.4 million registered tonnes in January 2022. Since then, this figure has increased by 117.5%, reaching 24.8 million tons today, writes Splash 24/7.

The publication notes that the increase in the total cargo capacity of the fleet in such registers is not a new phenomenon — many countries register vessels for the transportation of Rosneft. In particular, Gabon, whose registry was the fastest growing in shipping last year. The reason is that the country has allowed its flag to fly on ships of the Sovcomflot.

Two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of Gabon-flagged vessels increased by an unprecedented 675%. This allowed Gabon to become the second “navigable” country in Africa after Liberia.
