MSC has completed the construction of the largest LNG-powered cruise ship
Geneva Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) has completed the construction of the LNG-powered cruise ship MSC World Europa.
The new cruise liner has 20 decks that can accommodate 6,762 passengers and 2,138 crew members. The carrying capacity of the ship is 215,863 tons. MSC World Europa is currently considered the largest LNG-powered cruise ship, according to Fleetmon.
The liner is equipped with solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology, which can generate 150 kilowatts of electricity from LNG oxidation. Thus, the dependence on the on-board power generator is reduced. In addition, MSC World Europa is equipped with an advanced wastewater treatment system that reduces NOx emissions by 90%.
The hull has an innovative shape that not only minimizes the vessel’s drag, but also minimizes its acoustic impact on the ocean, preventing any potential impact on aquatic life.
The naming ceremony of the ship will take place on November 13 in the port of Doha. After that, the liner will become a hotel for tourists of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In 2024, 2025 and 2027, three more vessels of the same type will join the cruise ship. Construction of the first sister ship has already begun, it will be named MSC World America.
