National Agency on Corruption Prevention included the Belgian gas company Fluxys in the list of international sponsors of the war.

The Belgian independent operator of the Fluxys gas system has been added to the list of international sponsors of the war, the National Agency on Corruption Prevention reported.

The reason was that the company promotes the export of Russian LNG, thereby financing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Belgian independent gas system operator Fluxys provides storage and transshipment capacity for Russian liquefied natural gas Yamal LNG at its Zeebrugge terminal. The majority share of Yamal LNG belongs to the Russian gas company Novatek, which is directly involved in the financing of military aggression and war crimes in Ukraine.

An analysis by the International Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) in 2022 found that Fluxys and its shareholders profited by facilitating Russian LNG exports to markets in Asia, South America and the Middle East, especially in the winter months of 2021-2022. which exacerbated the European energy crisis and increased profits for Novatek.

Novatek is owned by Russian oligarchs Leonid Mikhelson and Gennady Timchenko. It is the main supplier of Russian liquefied natural gas to international markets. Michelson and Timchenko are part of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, and with the help of his regime, they seized the shares of international companies in Russian oil and gas projects. The company is the largest private producer of natural gas in Russia.

In July 2014, Novatek was added to the sanctions lists of the USA and Canada. In 2016, the US imposed sanctions against several of its subsidiaries. This year, on November 2, the United States introduced restrictions against the Arctic LNG 2 project, which was intended to double Novatek’s export capacity.
